Sound Advice: Baby I Hate You by The BB Guns

'60s pop and '70s punk collide on The BB Guns' latest EP.
"On one hand, the album is full of bubblegummy ‘60s pop goodness and girl-group harmonies. The choruses are all catchy earworms, and the lyrics tend towards the lovelorn. On the other hand, all that ‘60s pop is balanced out by an equally good-sized dose of early punk rock, complete with shouted bridges, herky-jerky guitars, and vocals that have the odd audiblesneer. If you can imagine Buzzcocks fronted by Ronnie Spector, you’re starting to get the idea."

Shows that rocked Toronto last week
SPHINXSBB GUNSDAS RAD and LOST BABIES  at the Silver Dollar, Friday, January 11. Rating: NNNN
"If you’ve played in a local rock band at any point in the last 15 years, chances are you have a Dan Burke story. And even if that story involves money he still owes you for a gig he booked during his wilder years, it’s likely you respect his passion and vision. So when the wildman promoter puts together a Class Of 2013 showcase of local acts he believes are destined for bigger things, we pay attention... BB Guns’ gang vocals drove home their catchy garage-rock, girl-group hooks...If this is the sound of 2013, we approve. BB Guns
Local five-piece have fortune on their side
By BENJAMIN BOLES

"Borcherdt’s experimental vision gelled with BB Guns’ punked-up 60s pop sound far better than you might guess. That wall-of-reverb aesthetic so popular in recent years is even more effective when shaped by someone who’s long used electronic echo effects as an instrument."

The Little Red Umbrella, March 2013

"The show lived to up the buzz we'd created inside our own heads — by which I mean both the hypeand our six-beers-into-the-night enthusiasm. The photogenic five-piece took to the stage at the Silver Dollar in the wee drunken hours of the morning, in front of a respectably-sized crowd given the time of night. And despite (or spurred on by?) the antics of the almost-certainly-drugged-out lady "dancing" in the front row (she literally sprawled herself out across the lip of the stage at one point), they energetically ripped through the songs we already know and love from their Bandcamp page — and from their upcoming debut, due out in May. CMF 2013 – RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FRIDAY MARCH 22, 2013

"I would describe The BB Guns as high octane feminine garage rock with strong influences from 1960’s pop rock.  The gruffness in the guitar work balances out the extremely feminine vocals to nice effect.  They remind me of a much happier and upbeat version of Sleater Kinney.  But ultimately they’re a little hard to describe and I get the impression that their live sets are a LOT louder than their recorded songs would suggest.  I’d recommend that you check out “Creep” from their small 2010 EP Mystery Girl"

One more slice of gold from Toronto, by Tess Parks

"The BB Guns are a band of beautiful girls and boys. It's basically a modern day love story. Front woman, Laura Hermiston, met Alana Marta Dee and Charlotte Marie while out partying with some of the Optical Sounds record label crew, and instantly fell in love with these girls that liked all the same music and who were dressed to the hilt. Sound Advice: Psych Pop from Toronto by Various Artists

A new compilation from Optical Sounds shows the diversity of Toronto's psych-pop scene.

"The BB Guns’ “Baby I Hate You” is cheerful and stripped down, with upbeat, girl-group-flavoured singing. Psych Pop shows off an interesting sample platter of bands that are different enough to be interesting, but similar enough that they go together. It’s proof of just how many talented bands there are in this city."
